His spirit lives on.

The Michael K. Wensel Foundation was established in 1994 after Michael's death to brain cancer. He was 14 years old when his battle ended. His parents, Jim and Susan Wensel, and siblings, Shawn and Jennifer, wanted to help other families dealing with childhood cancer. The foundation raises money, and in turn, donates funds to Make-A-Wish, the Ronald McDonald House, the American Cancer Society and local families coping with cancer.

An important part of Mike's life was sports. The main fundraiser for the Foundation is an annual volleyball tournament in St. Stephen, Minnesota each August. Many of Mike's former classmates come out to play or watch. Mike's siblings, Shawn and Jen, also have teams that play each year. It is a fun day to remember Mike and be with the people he touched in his short life. A raffle at the event raises money for the Foundation. Please consider donating to the Foundation or this event!

Holly Ball - Remembrance Tree

The Foundation has made a donation to the Remembrance Tree in Michael's name. Money raised for the Remembrance Tree is used by the Hospice Program at the St. Cloud Hospital.
The holidays are traditionally a time of joy and celebration with family and friends. They also can be a time to remember and honor those we've loved and lost. The Remembrance Tree and Book of Life continue to provide this opportunity. These symbols have been a part of Holly Ball and St. Cloud Hospital Hospice for nearly two decades. This year's Holly Ball celebration will continue this cherished tradition. The lights on the tree represent the spirit of those who have gone before us and the Book of Life contains the names of those we remember. In addition to being present at the Holly Ball, the Remembrance Tree and Book of Life will be displayed in Lobby E of the St. Cloud Hospital from mid-December to mid-January.

Another Fun Tournament!

The 15th Annual Volleyball Tournament for the Michael K. Wensel Foundation was once again a special day! It started with a huge kink: no power at Howie's! Just in time, the power came on after being out overnight, due to a huge storm that swept through the Sartell/St. Stephen/Rice area. The storm had downed many trees in the area, including the yard of Shawn Wensel, who left it in disarray to run the tournament with his family! Just over $2,200 was raised from the raffle and the teams had a terrific time! Most importantly, we remembered Mike throughout the day, and enjoyed time with friends-old and new!

Here is a kind message we received afterwards:
Hey Guys,
I just wanted to drop a line to say how much fun we had at the tournament. Not only was it a worthy cause, but Howie's is first-rate, the tourney well-organized, and the teams competitive but fun. We'll definitely be coming back--and maybe some other Bemidji teams as well. Shawn, Jim, and Jennifer, you guys are great hosts and we enjoyed every minute we were there. Thanks!
Justin (and the rest of the team)

We hope everyone feels the same! A huge thank you to the Kent family for the Toro prizes donated to the raffle, and many other items. We appreciate your help each year!
